Privacy policy
Last updated 23 September 2026
This policy explains what Indimi collects when you use the Indimi apps for iPhone and Android and the website indimi.com, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and what you can ask of us. It is written in plain language on purpose.
Who we are
Indimi is run by [To confirm: company legal name], [To confirm: registered postal address] (“Indimi”, “we”). We decide how the information described here is used. For anything about your data, write to support@indimi.com.
The short version
- We do not sell your data, and we do not show ads.
- We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. There are no advertising or analytics kits in the app or on the website.
- Text and pictures you translate are sent to Anthropic's Claude to be translated or read. Pictures are never stored.
- You can delete your account and everything linked to it at any time, in the app or at indimi.com/delete-account.
Your account
You can translate without an account. You need one to keep progress, to use friends and leaderboards, and to buy Indimi Pro.
Sign in with Apple. Apple gives us an identifier that is unique to Indimi, your email address if you choose to share it (it may be a private relay address that Apple forwards to you), and your name only the first time you sign in, if you choose to share it.
Sign in with Google. Google gives us an identifier, your email address and your name. It also gives us the address of your Google profile picture, which the app may show while you are signed in; we do not save it in our database.
Email and password (on the website). We keep your email address and a salted hash of your password. We never store or log the password itself.
With every account we keep the date it was created, the last time it was used, and the tier it is on (free or Pro).
Translating text
When you translate, the app sends your text (up to 1,000 characters) and the two languages to our servers. Single words we already have in our own dictionary are answered from it. Everything else is sent to Anthropic's Claude API, together with the words from our dictionary that appear in it, and the answer comes back to you.
We keep a copy of each sentence and its translation in a shared translation cache, so that the same sentence can be answered again without asking the model. The cache is not linked to you, your account or your device: it records that a sentence was translated, not who asked. Please do not translate passwords, identity numbers or anything else you would not want kept this way.
Your translation history lives only on your phone (the most recent one hundred translations). It is not sent to us.
Translating pictures
When you choose a picture to translate, the app sends it to our servers, which pass it to Anthropic's Claude API to read the text written in it. The picture is never saved and never written to our logs; it exists on our servers only while that request runs. The text read from it is then translated like typed text, and cached as described above. The app only sees the pictures you pick.
Anthropic
Anthropic processes what we send it on our behalf, to return the result, under its commercial terms. Under those terms it does not use our requests to train its models. [To confirm: that Indimi's Anthropic account is on the standard commercial terms, and how long Anthropic keeps API requests]
Counting free translations
The free plan includes five translations a day, text and pictures together, and the count starts again at midnight UTC. If you are signed in, we count against your account. If you are not, the app creates a random identifier when it is installed, keeps it on your device, and sends it with each translation so that we can count. It is not your device's advertising identifier, it is not linked to your name, and we use it for nothing else. For Indimi Pro we keep the same daily count, only to apply the fair use limit in our terms.
Listening to words
When you play a word or a sentence that has no recording yet, we send its text to a speech service to make the audio: Microsoft Azure AI Speech for English, French and Swahili, and Indimi's own voice service for Kinyarwanda and Kirundi. The audio is saved and reused for anyone who plays the same text. For your account we record only that a clip was made, how long the text was and when, to keep use within limits; we do not record which text. Some clips are recorded by native speakers who have agreed to it in writing. The app does not record your voice.
Learning progress
Where Indimi offers lessons and exercises, we keep your answers and scores, the words you have met and when to review them, your XP, streaks, quests, daily goal and study plans, so that your progress is the same on every device.
When you start, we may ask a few questions. Every one is optional: which languages you speak and want to learn, your level, why you are learning, your age band, your gender, how you heard of Indimi, when in the day you like to study, and whether you want a daily reminder. Your answers are shown only to you. We look at them only as totals, to understand who uses Indimi, and never use them to rank or select you. Reminders are scheduled on your phone.
Activity and time zone
While you are signed in and the app or website is open, it tells our servers about once a minute that you are active. We record which days you used Indimi and for how many minutes, and your device's time zone, so that streaks and daily goals follow your own calendar. We use the totals to count how many people use Indimi each day. This is the only usage measurement we do.
Like any online service, our servers keep technical logs of requests (the time, the address requested, how long it took, and errors) to keep Indimi running and secure. Your IP address is used briefly to limit abuse and is not stored with your account. [To confirm: how long technical logs are kept (the Azure default is 90 days)]
Friends and leaderboards
Where Indimi offers them, leaderboards rank signed in learners by XP. You appear under an anonymous handle unless you choose a username. If you choose one, other signed in learners can see it, your XP, streak and achievements on your player card, and can send you a friend request. We keep friend requests, friendships and blocks. A person you block is not told. You can change or remove your username at any time in your profile on the website.
The Indimi Tutor
Where the Indimi Tutor is offered, your conversations with it are kept with your account so you can return to them, and are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to write the tutor's replies, together with a short summary of your progress so the tutor can pitch the lesson at your level.
Booking a tutor
Where bookings are offered, a booking keeps the tutor, the time, the length, and a snapshot of your progress at the time you booked (your level, streak, how many words you know and the words you often miss), which your tutor sees so they can prepare. Calls take place on Jitsi Meet (meet.jit.si, run by 8x8), and the app asks for your camera and microphone only to join a call. We do not record calls. Tutors choose what their public profile shows to learners (their name, photo, languages, rate, city, availability and an introduction they record).
Indimi Pro and payments
Indimi Pro is sold through Apple on iPhone and through Google Play on Android. They take the payment; we never see your card or bank details. When you subscribe, the store sends us a signed record of the purchase: the plan, when it started, when it renews or ends, whether it renews automatically, its transaction identifier, and whether it was a test purchase. We link it to your account to unlock Pro, and the store tells us about renewals, cancellations and refunds.
If you help build Indimi
Native speakers who record audio for Indimi, or who check dictionary words from an invitation, do so under a separate agreement. We keep their recordings or answers with their name or account, as that agreement says.
Who processes your data for us
- Anthropic translates text, reads pictures, and writes the Indimi Tutor's replies.
- Microsoft Azure hosts our servers, database, audio files and logs, and makes audio for English, French and Swahili.
- Apple and Google sign you in if you choose them, and take payment for Indimi Pro.
- Jitsi Meet (8x8) carries tutor calls, where bookings are offered.
We share data with no one else, except when the law requires it, or to protect people from harm.
The website
The website keeps your sign in in your browser tab's session storage, which is cleared when you close the tab, and remembers preferences such as your language in your browser. It sets no advertising or tracking cookies.
Where your data is
Our servers and database run in Microsoft Azure's West Europe region. [To confirm: the region of the production database and file storage] Anthropic processes requests in the United States. Where data leaves your country, we rely on the safeguards the law provides for it, such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and everything linked to it until you delete the account. When you do, it is removed from our live database at once: your sign in details, profile and answers, progress, username, friends, requests and blocks, tutor conversations, bookings, plans and your Pro record. Database backups roll off within [To confirm: backup retention, at most 35 days], and technical logs as described above.
What is not linked to you stays after you leave: the shared translation cache, shared audio clips, and totals such as how many people used Indimi on a given day. The count kept for a device that is not signed in is used only to count that day's free translations. [To confirm: how long the API keeps daily counts for devices that are not signed in]
Deleting your account
In the app, open Settings and choose Delete account. On the web, go to indimi.com/delete-account. Or write to support@indimi.com. Deleting your account does not cancel an Indimi Pro subscription; cancel it in your Apple or Google subscription settings.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop or limit how we use it, and you can take back any consent you gave. Write to support@indimi.com from the email on your account; we answer within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
Indimi is meant for people aged [To confirm: minimum age, proposed 13] and older. If you are younger, please do not create an account. If you are older than that but under the age at which your country lets you agree to this on your own (up to 16 in parts of Europe), a parent or guardian must agree for you. If we learn that we hold data from a child below the minimum age, we delete it. Parents can write to us at support@indimi.com.
Security
Everything travels encrypted over HTTPS. Passwords are stored only as salted hashes, sign in sessions expire after 30 days, and access to our systems is limited to the people who run Indimi. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you if a breach affects your data.
Changes
When this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top. If a change matters to how your data is used, we will tell you in the app before it applies.
