Meaning

A soft red fruit eaten as a vegetable, in stews, sauces and salads. The same word is also used for a grandmother, especially in Tanzania.

Good to know

N class noun, the plural is also nyanya: nyanya mbivu, ripe tomatoes; nyanya chungu, a small bitter garden egg. For grandmother it takes m/wa agreement: nyanya yangu mpendwa.
