A soldier paid to fight for a country or group that is not his own. In political talk it is also a person who pretends to serve one side while working for another.

Good to know

N class noun used for people, the same in singular and plural: askari mamluki, mercenary soldiers. In party politics mamluki is an insult for a disloyal member.
