Meaning

To perform the Christian rite of baptism with water, by which a person joins the church and often receives a Christian name; loosely, to give someone or something a name.

Good to know

Takes the person as its object: kumbatiza mtoto, to baptize a child. The passive kubatizwa is to be baptized; ubatizo is baptism and the baptizer is mbatizaji.
