Introduces a fact that contrasts with the main statement, the way English 'although' does.

Good to know

It opens either clause; in speech the main clause often starts with lakini as well: Ingawa ni mgonjwa, lakini anafanya kazi. Japo and ijapokuwa are close synonyms.
