A personal prayer asking God for something, such as blessing, healing, peace or rest for the dead, said in one’s own words rather than in the set ritual prayer.

N class noun, the plural is also dua: kuomba dua, to pray; kusoma dua, to recite a prayer; dua mbaya, a curse. Mainly used by Muslims; the ritual prayer is sala.
